CHAPEL HILL, NC, UNITED STATES, October 19, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Gum recession is a common but often overlooked dental concern. When gum tissue pulls back, it can expose tooth roots, cause sensitivity and raise the risk of decay and tooth loss. Everbright Dental, a Chapel Hill dental practice with more than 30 years of experience serving local patients, is sharing an overview of the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST), a minimally invasive approach to treating gum recession. Dr. Manish Mistry, DDS, is a certified PST dentist. The practice was formerly known as Brightside Family Dental.

What is the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique?
PST was developed by Los Angeles dentist Dr. John Chao as an alternative to traditional gum grafting. The dentist makes a small opening in the gum, uses specialized instruments to loosen the existing tissue, and gently repositions it over the exposed root. Collagen strips are placed to help hold the tissue in position. The technique does not use a scalpel or sutures, and no donor tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth.

How does it compare with traditional grafting?
Conventional grafting often involves removing tissue from the palate and stitching it in place. PST works with the patient’s existing gum tissue. Published patient information describes less discomfort and a quicker recovery than with traditional grafting, although individual results vary.

Why experience matters
Gum recession can have several causes, including gum disease and aggressive brushing, and treatment depends on the patient’s anatomy and overall oral health. Over more than three decades, Everbright Dental has treated patients across a wide range of conditions. That experience helps the team determine when PST may be appropriate and when another approach is a better fit.

“Many people don’t realize their gums are receding until they notice sensitivity. Our goal is to help patients understand what is happening, what their options are, and which approach fits their situation.” – Dr. Manish Mistry, DDS, Everbright Dental

Who may be a candidate?
Suitability depends on the type and severity of recession, gum thickness and overall oral health. A comprehensive exam is the first step, and patients with active gum disease generally need that treated first.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Does PST require stitches?
A. – No, the technique does not use sutures.
Q. Does it replace regular dental care?
A. – No. Patients still need routine cleanings and exams to protect their gums.
Q. What are common signs of gum recession?
A. – Patients often notice teeth that look longer than before, increased sensitivity to hot or cold, or a visible notch near the gumline. Bleeding or swollen gums can also point to underlying gum disease. Because recession tends to progress gradually, a dental exam is the best way to find out what is happening and what options may help.
