Global X Management Company LLC (“Global X”), the New York-based provider of exchange-traded funds (ETFs), today announced the launch of the Global X Small Modular Reactor ETF (ticker SMRZ).
SMRZ (“the Fund”) seeks to provide targeted exposure to the companies designing, building, and fueling small modular reactors (SMRs), compact nuclear reactors that are built in factories, transported to pre-selected sites, and assembled individually or in clusters.
“The nuclear renaissance isn’t coming. It’s here,” said Pedro Palandrani, Head of Product Research & Development at Global X. “This year, the U.S.’s Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved construction of the first commercial small modular reactor in the U.S. AI is a big part of the demand story, but it isn’t the whole story. The grid needs reliable, around-the-clock power that’s built at home, and we believe SMRs could be one of the few technologies capable of delivering it at scale.”
The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects investment in nuclear energy to increase globally. Its most modest scenario envisions investment increasing from $65 billion to $70 billion annually while global nuclear capacity rises by more than 50% to nearly 650 gigawatts (GW) by 2050.[iii]
In its centrist estimate, IEA sees investment hitting $120 billion in 2030 and nuclear capacity more than doubling by mid-century.] Stronger government support in the centrist model could deliver more than 1,000 SMRs by 2050 with total capacity of 120 GW. This would result in SMR investment jumping from $5 billion today to more than $25 billion in 2030, amounting to cumulative investment of $670 billion by 2050.[iv]
While large traditional reactors will likely attract the majority of nuclear investment, the IEA states that SMRs are poised for rapid growth. SMRs, which are expected to coexist with traditional reactors, offer lower upfront costs, faster deployment, and greater scalability than traditional nuclear power plants. Traditional plants have been challenging to finance due to their scale, capital intensity, long construction lead times, and technical complexity.
“SMRs sound new, but the engineering isn’t,” Palandrani noted. “The U.S. Navy has run small reactors since the USS Nautilus in 1954.[v] What’s changed are the policies, the capital, and the demand, which are now aligned.”
SMRZ and three other recently launched ETFs each seek to provide investors with targeted exposure to specialized segments of the technology supply chain via a single, transparent ETF. The other funds are Global X Asia Semiconductor ETF (ACHP); Global X LLM ETF (LLMA); and Global X MLCC & Electronic Components ETF (MLCC).
As an actively managed fund, SMRZ is designed to deliver concentrated exposure to approximately 15 companies across global developed markets and select emerging markets. To be included, a company generally must either (i) derive at least 50% of its total revenue from designing, developing, building, or servicing SMRs, or the fuel and service agreements tied directly to those reactors, or (ii) qualify as a development-stage company. Please see the fund prospectus for a description of a development-stage company.

The companies in which the Funds invest may be subject to rapid changes in technology, intense competition, rapid obsolescence of products and services, and changes in business cycles and government regulation.
International investments may involve risk of capital loss from unfavorable fluctuation in currency values, from differences in generally accepted accounting principles or from social, economic or political instability in other nations. Emerging markets involve heightened risks related to the same factors as well as increased volatility and lower trading volume. Narrowly focused investments may be subject to higher volatility.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Outbound Investment Security Program and related laws such as the COINS Act restrict or require notification (or will when fully implemented) of certain U.S. person investments in entities linked to countries of concern (including China, Hong Kong and Macau) that are engaged in specified activities involving semiconductors, quantum information technologies, certain artificial intelligence systems, high-performance computing and hypersonic systems. Some transactions, including certain transactions in publicly traded securities and certain derivatives, are excepted, subject to conditions. These rules are evolving and may expand to cover additional sectors, countries or transactions or narrow or eliminate existing exemptions, which could limit the Funds’ ability to invest in certain companies, require divestment of existing holdings or notification to the U.S. Treasury, increase diligence and reporting costs, and adversely affect the Funds’ performance, value or liquidity.
ACHP and LLMA’s A-Share investments via the Stock Connect Programs are subject to trading, clearance and settlement procedures that are relatively untested in mainland China, daily purchase quotas that, once exceeded, may cause buy orders to be rejected, and the risk that securities may lose Stock Connect eligibility. Stock Connect is subject to further interpretation, and there is no assurance that it will continue or that changes in laws, regulations, policies or tax rules will not adversely affect investments or returns.
Investments in securities of Chinese issuers may subject SMRZ, ACHP and LLMA to legal, regulatory, political, currency, security, and economic risks specific to China, including economic, political and social instability; pervasive government control of, and intervention in, companies and industries; and trade tensions, tariffs, sanctions, cyber-related disputes and other geopolitical conflicts. Chinese companies, including those listed on U.S. exchanges, are subject to less stringent regulatory, accounting and auditor oversight requirements than companies in more developed countries, so information about them may be less reliable or complete, and shareholders may have limited legal remedies. Investments may be subject to loss due to expropriation or restrictions on foreign investment and repatriation of capital.
Newly listed companies may have limited trading history and less publicly available information about their operations and performance. Their prices may be highly volatile or decline shortly after listing, and direct listing or IPO shares are subject to heightened market and liquidity risk and may involve high transaction costs.
Swap agreements are contracts between the Fund and a counterparty to exchange the return of an underlying investment and may involve greater risks than direct investment in securities. Many swaps trade over the counter and may be illiquid, so the Fund may be unable to close a swap position at an advantageous time or price, which may result in significant losses. Swaps are also subject to counterparty credit, correlation, valuation, liquidity and leverage risks.
There can be no guarantee that active management strategies and processes will be successful.
Shares of ETFs are bought and sold at market price (not NAV) and are not individually redeemed from the Fund. Brokerage commissions will reduce returns.
Carefully consider the Funds’ investment objectives, risks, and charges and expenses before investing. This and other information can be found in the Funds’ summary or full prospectuses, which may be obtained at https://www.globalxetfs.com. Please read the prospectus carefully before investing.
